Urban Youth Empowerment Program

Education & Youth Services

One of our many programs is the Urban Youth Empowerment Program (UYEP). UYEP is a program targeted for area youth ages 14-24 living in a high crime, economically disadvantaged area in Fort Wayne that are facing barriers to educational and employment opportunities.

 To be an eligible candidate for participation in the UYEP program, applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • 1) Must be 14-24 years of age

  • 2) Be an individual considered at risk, being limited in post-secondary education and job opportunities

  • 3) Parent or guardian must be prepared to verify all information at the time of official submission for 14-17 year olds

  • 4) Currently live in areas served by the Fort Wayne Urban League

  • 5) Demonstrated interest in UYEP activities and standards of performance including the dress and appearance code

Program Goal

To offer disadvantaged youth the opportunity to successfully transition to adult roles and responsibilities. Youth will develop a plan of action to meet desired goals and follow through with the steps to SUCCESS!!

Limited Enrollment

Once you are admitted to the program, you will be required to also participate in the workforce development activities, education and training, case-management, mentoring and community-wide efforts to reduce violence and crime.  Enrollment period will end when all the spaces are filled, available spaces are very limited. Participation is based on eligibility, verification, as well as the applicant's level of commitment.

Services Offered

Participants in the UYEP program will be given access to Work Experience and Job Placement, Stipends, Apprenticeships and Certifications, GED-HSE, Tutors, Mentors, Financial Aid for College and direct support with transitional services which include job readiness assessment and training, career assessment and planning as well as counseling and other supportive services.

Underage participants will be placed in paid summer internships that often parallel career goals, they are also matched with mentors in job shadowing.

All UYEP participants will receive preparation and guidance for post-secondary education, occupational training & certification and or placement opportunities. After successful completion, a cash incentive in the form of a re-loadable Visa card will be awarded to each individual student. Participants will also receive incentives for hours spent meeting goal requirements including volunteering & community service.
